Nebraska Safety Council Offer Teen Driver Education Course

GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- The Nebraska Safety Council will be offering a Teen Driver Education Course throughout the summer in various cities including Grand Island the week of the July 20th and Hastings the week of July 27th.

Recently, the website Wallethub.com ranked Nebraska among one of the worst states for Teen Driving, coming in at 45 out all 50 states. According to the Nebraska Office of Highway Safety, Nebraska Teen make seven percent of licensed drivers in the state. The same age group is also responsible for 21 percent of all reported crashes in the state.

"I don't know if teenagers should drive because there is like, it's hard to be responsible when you're a teenager because you get put under like peer pressure," said student driver Jacquelyn Salas.

Salas said enrolling in the course was her mother's idea because that would mean lower insurance for when Salas obtains her license.

Driving instructor David Coleman says whether a parent is sending their child to a driver's education course for insurance purposes or not, it may be the best option in teaching teens how to be safe on the road.

"I also teach a class for young drivers who get tickets and so when they come in I ask them did you ever have driver's ed? Very few of them had driver's ed. So I just, taken from that I see very few kids who've had driver's ed, I see very few ever come to that class. That's part of the reason I think it makes a difference" said Coleman

The Nebraska Safety Council course provides 20 hours of classroom instruction and 5 1/2 hours of behind-the-wheel training which includes testing to obtain the student's provisional operator's permit (POP).

Students may register for a driver education course online at www.nesafetycouncil.org.
