Destructive Fire on Hall County Farm

A fire sparked on a corn farm on 190th Road, just south of Airport Road in Cairo and the flames destroyed four farm sheds. Luckily, the farm house remained untouched, no one was home and there were no reported injuries.

CAIRO, Neb. -- Around 3:30 Tuesday afternoon, the Wood River and Cairo fire departments responded to a call on 190th Road.

"One of the neighbors noticed some heavy black smoke coming away from his farm so he drove over here, found out that there was a structure on fire and he called 911," said Brian Urbom, assistant chief of the Wood River Fire Department.

When crews arrived on the scene they found four farm sheds engulfed in flames but the farmhouse survived.

"I figured it was the house, I really did because there is no electricity in that building and I just couldn't figure out what started it, I figured the house was going," said Larry Hadenfeldt, the father of the property owner.

Although the main property is still completely in tact, the sheds and their contents are a complete loss.

"Reality hit in and all of our equipment was in there so I guess we have to start looking for new equipment," Hadenfeldt added.

Several small sheds like the farm property, Hadenfeldt feels lucky that the flames didn't spread to any more structures.

Hadenfeldt continued, "It's just lucky these other ones didn't catch on fire, well that old chicken house did. We had some equipment stored in some other building and it's just lucky it didn't get to them, thanks to the guys,"

The property owner declined to speak on camera but his father summed up the feelings of the parties involved, "Well nobody got hurt of course, I'm glad nobody got hurt and it didn't get any worse than what it did, we can replace any equipment, we can't replace people."

$55 Million Proposal for Lincoln Library

Proponents for a new library in downtown Lincoln proposed a $55 million bond to replace the Bennett Martin Public Library.

LINCOLN, Neb.-- Proponents for a new library in downtown Lincoln proposed a $55 million bond to replace the Bennett Martin Public Library.

The proposal was shared with LIBA during a luncheon Monday.

The library board says the $55 million would be used to either tear down the Pershing Center and build the library on its grounds, or remodel the historic building. A portion of the money would also go toward the remodels and upkeep of some of the library branches.

"Libraries are of course part of the education system. They're just as much of the educational system as public schools," said President of the Lincoln Library Board of Directors, Herb Friedman. "And we think when you invest in a library you are investing in education."

LIBA, who has not taken a stance on a new downtown library, said that they would like to see the private sector purchase the Pershing Center, giving the developer the opportunity to add to the value and appeal of the downtown area.

They argue that voters who approved to build the $186 million Pinnacle Bank Arena where under the impression that the private sector would purchase the Pershing Center and increase the tax base.

Friedman and other board members argue that the Pershing Center has "always been public," and they don't want to see it end up in the hands of the private sector.

The library board compared Lincoln libraries to two dozen other cities of similar size and culture and found that the Capital City is decades behind.

"We know that things are changing," said Library Director, Pat Leach. "And we want to make sure that our library system evolves with those changes."

If the city approves the proposal, it would still have to be voted on by taxpayers, who would be affected by a small property tax increase.

The earliest the proposal could end up on a ballot is the Spring of 2017, according to Friedman.

The U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Nebraska Service Center is one of four in the nation.

LINCOLN, Neb. -- The U.S Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Nebraska Service Center is one of four in the nation.

The center receives and decides on more than 950,000 applications and petitions for immigration benefits each year.

For Senior Immigration Officer J. Kennedy, working at the center is a sense of pride and a continuation of her family's story.

"I'm fulfilling the ultimate immigrants story in that I'm perpetuating my fathers dream," said Kennedy, "for his destiny when he came to the United States as a small child and for my grandparents who worked so hard to get us here."

Immigration Officer Armin Terzic says he is humbled to work at the center.

"I was refugee from Bosnia which was...torn by...war so we had to escape," said Terzic, "and so it's really a blessing and a privilege...to be able to... help people in regards to better their lives and their situations just like the way I needed it to be better."

The center employs more than 1,250 people.

This year the center was named one of Lincoln's Best Places to Work in 2015 as part of a survey by Woods & Aitken LLP, the Lincoln Journal Star, and the Lincoln Human Resource Management Association.

Nebraska Appeals Court Reverses Drunken Driving Conviction

The Nebraska Court of Appeals has reversed a drunken driving conviction for a Wisner man who argued his constitutional rights were violated when a police officer stopped him to gather information about someone else

OMAHA, Neb.-- The Nebraska Court of Appeals has reversed a drunken driving conviction for a Wisner man who argued his constitutional rights were violated when a police officer stopped him to gather information about someone else's possible criminal activity.

The reversal comes in the DUI case of Adam Woldt, who was convicted last year of drunken driving. Woldt argued that none of the evidence gathered after he was stopped in September 2013 should have been allowed. Woldt reasoned that because the officer had no suspicion that Woldt had committed a crime when he was stopped, his constitutional right to be free of unreasonable search and seizure had been violated.

The appeals court agreed, saying that the officer's need to question Woldt and his concern for public safety didn't outweigh Woldt's liberty interest.

LINCOLN, Neb.-- Lincoln Police have arrested a man for allegedly trying to start a truck and a fence on fire.

Officers say 36-year-old Richard Mason went to a former bosses house upset, intoxicated and smelling of gasoline. Police say Mason told him that they had "better call the fire department." That's when the man noticed a fence had been doused in gasoline.

Police say Mason also tried to start another neighbor's truck on fire. Trash and hay ignited in the back of the truck, but police say there was no damage to the truck.
