Plans To Extend Lake Maloney Trail Underway

The Lake Maloney Property Owners Association plans to extend the trail at the lake.

North Platte, Neb. KNOPTV -- The Lake Maloney Property Owners Association plans to extend the trail at the lake.

"It's very peaceful and quiet. We have the water recreation, water skiing and fishing. It's just a nice place to be," said Lake Maloney Property Owners Association President James States.

Which is why they brainstormed the idea of building a trail along the lake twelve years ago.

"We have a very narrow county road. One hundred and eighty residences live here and its a very unsafe, narrow county road. So the idea for the trail is to be able to get people off of the trail," States said.

The association is planning to add another 1.6 miles to the trail for a total of 2.6 miles.

"It will run all of the way from the end of the existing trail and down to the inlet which will make for a very nice trail," said States.

On Monday, association members went before the County Board of Commissioners to seek a $250,000 grant application from the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission to build the trail.

But the board must agree to take ownership of the trail for the next 25 years to get approved for the grant.

"It's an 80/20 match grant. We will be responsible for the maintenance of the trail and we have a contract for 25 years with a lease from Nebraska Public Power District that the county will actually have the lease. So that's why we appreciate what the county is doing," said States.

The trail will connect all four state parks at the lake and will be complete by next summer.
