GRAND ISLAND, Neb. -- Hall County Attorney Jack Zitterkopf has identified the 5-year-old Lincoln girl who drowned at at Island Oasis Water Park Saturday.

Officials say five year-old Nubari Koffree of Lincoln died in the wave pool. Officials say the machine was not functioning as she was in the pool.

Preliminary autopsy reports show drowning is cause of death. Hall County Attorney says Koffree just turned five on July 5th. Her mother is Dumale Boriyiga.

The Grand Island Fire Department responded to a call at Island Oasis Water Park around 4 p.m.

In a press conference held Sunday morning, Mayor Jeremy Jensen reflected on the pain of the family involved, referring to an anecdote a friend recently told him.

"When a child loses their parents, the child is called an orphan. When a married couple loses a spouse, the surviving spouse is called a widow. However, there is no word that describes a parent that loses a child because there is no to encapsulate the pain or accurately describe how the parent feels," said Mayor Jensen.

Jensen is asking the community of Grand Island to come together to keep the family and staff in their thoughts and prayers.

"I'm also asking everyone to keep the staff of Island Oasis in their thoughts and prayers as well because they, too, are hurting. Tragic accidents don't come with a warning," said Jensen.

City Administrator Marlan Ferguson adds he is proud of Grand Island and the responsiveness of the fire department in getting to the young girl.

"I also want to stress to the public that they should have complete confidence at Island Oasis, our city facilities, and I can assure you they are well maintained, well staffed and very well trained," said Ferguson.

Ferguson also said there has not been a drowning or a death at Island Oasis since its opening in 1994.

Island Oasis will continue to stay open under normal operating hours.
